What A Time To Be A Baby…

THE BACKSTORY: Every day is a sort of new meditation on what the future holds for ourselves, and for Ember’s life.  It’s interesting to me that 3 Reagan babies would bring a baby into the world just as another demagogic, actor patriarch takes hold of the reigns of power. There’s an all too convenient narrative quality to it, like our lives and our child’s life rhyme with each other in some way.  That being said, the world continues to teeter on the brink of total annihilation after 30 years, but perhaps now in new ways that weren’t so evident in my childhood.  Technology advances exponentially, to the point that it seems to have taken the steering wheel now.  Culture morphs, our collective knowledge expands, and we head ever onward towards the great unknowns of our future.

I can only begin to ponder what will unfold in Ember’s lifetime. We routinely joke about the mind-bending ways Ember’s day to day life might meld with advanced technologies and refined cultures we only dared to dream in our youth.  Marco is often openly asking, “in what ways will Ember be radical that we just never knew about ourselves?” And I’m often asking myself a similar question, “in what ways will Ember’s parents seem antiquated to them?”

I’m excited to find out. I’m excited to see in what ways Ember and their generation will build on our achievements and failures.
