On The Way To El Paso.

THE BACKSTORY: During our train ride, we spent almost as much of time eating vegan snacks we had packed with us (hence the first panel) as we did talking! For the record, we tried Amtrak’s vegan burger and it was disgusting. I also spent a lot of time working from the road, which later proved to be fruitless, as the organization I was working for was is disarray, partly due to a board mostly full of privileged folks who expected for us to recruit over 60 volunteer positions that were as much work as a full-time job, but also due to the fact that I was unwittingly walking into a totally torn community with little idea because everyone had brushed years of conflicts under the rug and many people just weren’t willing to return to what I had thought was a constructive, radical, feminist environment. I spent a lot of the train trip unpacking the emotional and community baggage of my increasingly stressful job, but we mostly talked about our childhoods, our goals as parents, and our dreams for our future together as we were bringing Marco’s mom and sister back to Portland and about to welcome our baby into the world.
